Observed on the last Monday in May, Memorial Day is considered by many as the unofficial start of summer. It’s an excuse to pull out the grill, hang out with family and friends, and watch the fireworks.

But while this holiday is filled with fun festivities, Memorial Day was originally intended as a national day of remembrance. The holiday dates back to the Civil War as a way of honoring fallen soldiers.

Fortunately, there’s still plenty of ways to enjoy the day off and head out of town while still observing the original intentions of this holiday. Here are some local events to check out during the upcoming three-day Memorial weekend (May 23 – 25):

Bay Area

  • Ceremony at the National Cemetery: This annual parade is the biggest Memorial Day event in the area and pays tribute to local Veterans. The 30-minute parade starts in the Presidio and finishes at the National Ceremony where an hour-long presentation begins. Parade begins 10:30 am in the Presidio on May 25
  • Patriotic Music Concert: The Golden Gate Park Band will be dedicating this Sunday’s concert to patriotic music. Concert begins at 1:00 pm at the Specks Temple of Music in the Music Concourse at Golden Gate Park on May 24
